For the past
10 years the Shamrock House in East Durham, N.Y. has been the sponsor of a
Benefit Afternoon for the children of Ireland. Each year monies have been
raised over the Columbus Day Weekend to help bring out children during the
summer months to America. The afternoon is highlighted with entertainers
donating their time and talents, Irish Step Dancers from the Michael Farrell
School of Irish Dancing located here in East Durham, N.Y.. as well as
donated door prizes and raffles from the local community businesses and
refreshments served all afternoon. Every year we are grateful to have as
the Master of Ceremonies, Entertainer and Irish Radio Host, Frankie Curran.
It is an afternoon of family togetherness for the whole family, and we are
happy to announce that this is our 10th Benefit.
“We bring out children and
they go into American homes”, Denis Mulcahy is quoted as saying. It is
incredible what has come as a result of getting people together.
Project Children was born
in 1975, one of the worst years of the troubles between the North and the
South. “ There was a lot of rioting and a few kids were actually being
killed,” said Mulcahy. From the first six kids, seeds grew a rather large
Project Children family tree now totaling 13,000 young souls. In more
recent years, Project Children has entered into a partnership arrangement
with Habitat for Humanity, the Jimmy Carter inspired voluntary organization
that builds homes for those with the dream but not quite the means of home
ownership. Project Children shows the Protestant and Catholic kids that
they have nothing to fear from each other and much to gain. Several years
ago Project Children expanded to include university students by offering
summer internships on Capital Hill.
There is still a lot of
work to be done. Our vision remains the same to help build peace in Northern
Ireland through its children and young people. Founder, Denis Mulcahy feels
that we are still working with a much divided community over in Ireland.
The Shamrock House will continue to support Project Children and Denis
Mulcahy as long as necessary. The Benefit Afternoon is only just a small
part of helping the Children of Ireland. The Kellegher Family ask your
continued support and invite you to be a part of the Project Children
family.
